City of Inmates - Book Discussion

Our Westside book group is planning to read and discuss Kelly Lytle Hernández's book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771–1965.

The book explains how the City of Angels became the capital city of the world’s leading incarcerator. But City of Inmates also chronicles resilience and rebellion, documenting how targeted peoples and communities have always fought back. As LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey faces credible progressive challengers for her position, turmoil fills with LA County Sheriff’s office, and there’s an Reform LA Jails initiative on the March 2020 ballot, this couldn’t be any more timely a read.

We will be at Jessica’s home again in the Palms/Beverlywood area.
